Box Score SAN ANGELO, Texas – McMurry University's men's basketball team presented
Zach Pickelman with his first collegiate head coaching victory and – in the process – notched its first win of the young 2015-16 season with a 68-67 win over Schreiner University at the Ed Messbarger Classic. The War Hawks are now 1-2 on the year.
Senior
Chris Cerny canned a three-point basket at the 14:39 mark of the first period – off an assist from
Nate Estrada – to give the War Hawks their largest lead of the half, 16-10. McM would go on to carry a four-point cushion, 33-29, into the locker room.
The Mountaineers chipped away in the second half. SU eventually caught and passed the War Hawks with 12 minutes remaining in the game. By the 8:28 juncture, the Mountaineers had built their largest lead of the night, 53-44.
But McMurry was not to be deterred this night, out-scoring Schreiner 13-4 over the next five minutes to take the upper hand for good on a pair of free throws by
Nate Estrada. A jumper by Estrada gave the War Hawks a six-point margin, 62-56, with 1:21 remaining to be played.
With just 10 seconds left, McM freshman
Calvin McGee made one of two charity tosses to give his team a 68-64 lead. Schreiner canned an uncontested three as the clock rolled to zeroes, for the 68-67 final score.
Estrada finished the night with 17 points on a 5-for-11 shooting effort from the floor. Estrada was also 6-for-6 from the free throw line and had a game-high four assists. He also had a block and two steals.
Sophomore
LaRandall Scroggins had 16 points and a team-leading five rebounds before fouling out. Scroggins was 7-of-11 from the field.
Gabriel Chacon was McM's third player in double digits with 15 points, thanks to a 5-of-8 shooting game and a 3-of-6 mark from beyond the arc.
Schreiner did out-rebound McM by a 37-29 margin. However, the War Hawks' defense forced the Mountaineers into 17 turnovers.
