Box Score HOBBS, N.M. – McMurry University men's basketball opened its 2015-16 season with a 107-62 loss to NAIA foe University of the Southwest on the road. The game was the McM debut for head coach
Zach Pickelman.
The War Hawks (0-1) trailed by nine points at the half – 55-46 – but managed just 16 second-half points.
The Mustangs (4-3) shot 54 percent from the field and out-rebounded McMurry by a 54-36 margin. McM shot 40 percent from the floor in the opening segment, but had just a 21-percent effort in the second. USW had a total of eight players with eight or more points in a balanced attack, but it was the War Hawks'
Nate Estrada who led all scorers with 15 points.
Estrada was 5-of-12 from the floor, including burying three treys. Estrada was the only McM player in double digits. Sophomore
Aaron Gettys had nine points – aided by a 4-for-4 free throw game – and also passed of for three assists.
Junior
Thierry Tchenko hit 3-of-6 field goals on his way to an eight point night.
LaRandall Scroggins also tallied eight points and pulled down five rebounds.
Senior
Chris Cerny also had five caroms, to go along with five points. Freshman
Calvin McGee had four assists, as well.
The War Hawks will play at Angelo State's Ed Messbarger Classic this weekend. McM takes on NCAA Division II St. Edward's University on Friday (5 p.m.) and Schreiner University on Saturday (5 p.m.).
