MONROE, La. – McMurry University's men's basketball team traveled to NCAA Division I University of Louisiana-Monroe for an exhibition game and came out on the short end of an 88-43 decision before a crowd of 1,344 at the Faint-Ewing Coliseum.
While the game was considered as an exhibition for the NCAA III McMurry War Hawks, it was the season-opening game for the ULM Warhawks (1-0).
ULM took control of the contest from the get-go, leading 43-12 by the end of the first half. McM was out-scored by a 45-31 margin in the second stanza.
Sophomore
LaRandall Scroggins was the only War Hawk in double figures, finishing with 10 points. Scroggins hit 5-of-9 from the field and also grabbed a team-leading seven rebounds in 30 minutes of court time.
Fellow sophomore
Aaron Gettys connected on 3-of-4 shots from the floor and was 2-for-2 from the free throw stripe, for nine points.
Nate Estrada and
Blake Cochran each dropped in five points for McM.
Calvin McGee,
Gabriel Chacon,
Thierry Tchenko and
Trumaine Elmore all tallied three points, with
Cameron Jackson chipping in two to round out the McMurry scorers.
ULM won the battle of the boards, out-rebounding McMurry by a 41-23 count. McM committed 18 turnovers.
Louisiana-Monroe shot an impressive 62.3 percent (33-53) from the field. McMurry was held to 29.8 percent shooting (17-57) as a team. McM did hit more from beyond the three-point arc than did ULM (7 to 5), with no McMurry players making more than one trey.
