ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University men's soccer team took could not hold a first-half lead in dropping a 3-1 decision to the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor at Wilford Moore Stadium.
The Crusaders upped their record to 6-4-1 overall. The War Hawks fell to 1-11-1.
Freshman
Josh Erwin's first collegiate goal got the War Hawks' Homecoming Weekend crowd whipped into a frenzy in the 36th minute. Erwin settled a corner kick in front of the net and took a shot that was saved by UMHB goalie Javier Zaragoza. Erwin stayed vigilant and got the rebound, snapping it right back into the net past Zaragoza.
McM made the 1-0 lead stand up through the intermission.
However, in the 70th minute, the War Hawks' fortunes to a drastic turn for the worse. McM was called for a hand ball in the box, giving the Cru a penalty kick. Ban Hammonds converted the PK to knot the game at 1-1.
Less than two minutes later, UMHB would net the match-winning goal when Sean Diamond took a pass from McKenna Cook and drilled the ball past McM net-minder
Austin Long to make it 2-1. UMHB added an insurance goal in the 80th minute off the foot of Julio Mar.
UMHB out-shot McMurry by a 20-6 margin, with 11 on-goal. The War Hawks- who took all six of their shots in the first half – had four on-goal.
Long had eight saves for McM. Zaragoza had three saves for the Cru.
McMurry will next play at crosstown foe Hardin-Simmons University next Saturday (Oct. 17) at 3 p.m.
