ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University's men's tennis team dominated Dallas Baptist University in a Heartland Conference match, 9-0, at the Seidel-Swagerty Tennis Center. The win improved the War Hawks' record to 5-5 overall and 3-1 in the Heartland Conference.
Exactly how commanding was McM effort against the Patriots? McMurry dropped just four games in the three doubles matches and a total of 10 games among all six singles contests. That fact afforded McM coach
Mark Hathorn the luxury of getting some court time for some of his younger players.
At No. 1 doubles, McMurry's tandem of
Chris Breaux and
Casjen Rico were victorious as partners for the 30th time in their careers. The senior Breaux and junior Rico easily dispatched of DBU's Dean Dahlsten/Bryant Forshee, 8-3. Breaux and Rico are 6-4 in 2014.
McMurry's No. 2 doubles team of
Preston Steblein and
Dustin Douglas kept their juggernaut going, as well. The Steblein-Douglas express improved to 6-1 on the year by blitzing the Patriots' Colby Milner and Brandon O'Donovan, 8-0.
The No. 3 McM doubles pair of
Carlos Perez and
Hunter Ward defeated Anthony Burch and Cameron Longfellow, 8-1. Perez and Ward are 2-0 this season.
Felipe Cruz and Breaux each picked up their third singles wins of the year, playing Nos. 1 and 2, respectively. Steblein evened his personal record at 5-5 with a win at No. 3 and Rico notched his team-leading eighth singles win (8-2) at No. 4.
Tom Weir got the nod from Hathorn at No. 5 singles and responded with a straight-set win over Longfellow, 6-4, 6-0, improving to 2-0 in individual play. Likewise,
Austin Todd also upped his record to 2-0, defeating Milner, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 6 singles.
