ABILENE, Texas – McMurry's men's basketball team climbed back from an early deficit against St. Mary's University, but ran out of gas down the stretch, 69-64, at Kimbrell Arena.
The War Hawks (11-13, 6-9 HC) trailed by as much as 13 points – 16-3 - with 13:14 left in the first half against the athletic Rattlers (17-7, 10-6 HC). But the resilient McM squad would go on a 24-10 run over the next 11 minutes to overtake SMU on a layup by
Alfred Perez with 2:19 remaining until the intermission.
The Rattlers would take a 31-29 lead in the locker room.
In the early portion of the second half, the two teams jockeyed back and forth with four ties and in the opening five minutes of the period. A trey by SMU's JJ Bolton put his team on top, 41-38, an advantage that the Rattlers would not relinquish.
After SMU lead by eight with 6:44 left, McMurry clawed back to within a single possession – 57-55 – on a Perez jumper. The Rattlers managed to keep the host War Hawks at bay down the stretch and converted six-of-seven free throws in the final 30 seconds.
Perez led all scorers with 19 points, making good on 9-of-17 from the field. Perez also pulled down eight rebounds, blocked two shots and made two steals.
Brandon Golden matched Perez with eight caroms and tallied 12 points. Golden also gave off a game-leading five assists.
Alex Lewis added 10 points off the bench as the third War Hawks in double figures.
St. Mary's had a balanced attack, with Justin Alexander booking 13 points. Three other Rattlers contributed 11 points each.
The McM men will play their final home game of the 2013-14 season on Saturday versus Texas A&M International University. Tip-off is slated for 3 p.m. (following the women's game). Seniors Perez,
Cameron Saville and
Kourtney Goff will be honored between games.
