ABILENE, Texas – The McMurry University men's tennis team did not lose a set in either of its Day 1 matches and – in the process – clinched the National Christian College Athletic Association Central Region championship at the Seidel-Swagerty Tennis Center. The War Hawks dispatched of Central Christian College, 9-0, in their morning match and followed that up with a 9-0 blanking of Dallas Baptist University in the afternoon.
For the host McM team, the wins and guarantee of advancing to the NCCAA national tournament could not have come on a better day. Just prior to the first serve to open the NCCAA regional, McMurry friends and faithful gathered for the dedication and the ribbon cutting for the recently-renovated Seidel-Swagerty Tennis Center and the Charles A. “Chuck” Hutchinson III Memorial Classroom.
The War Hawks AD to wait until Saturday's conclusion of the tournament to receive their championship banner at the post-tournament awards ceremony. However, the large throng of McMurry fans celebrated the two wins with the team after it closed out DBU in the nightcap.
McM had a dominating performance, not losing a set the entire day. The War Hawk line-up in singles –
Chris Breaux,
Felipe Cruz,
Dani Perez,
Preston Steblein, Christiano Mendes and
Casjen Rico playing Nos. 1-6, respectively - lost just 20 total games, in the 24 sets played, between the two victories.
The doubles tandems of Breaux and Rico at No. 1, Cruz and Perez at No. 2 and Mendes and Steblein at No. 3 were equally in command. Versus Central Christian, Breaux and Rico were taken to 8-5 to get the win, but both of the others matches ended at 8-0. Against DBU, Cruz and Perez won 8-4 at No. 2, while Nos. 1 and 3 were 8-2 War Hawk wins.
Breaux was named as the tournament MVP. Rico and Steblein joined him on the all-tournament team from the champions War Hawks.
McMurry will next head to Mobile, Ala., for the NCCAA National Championships on May 7-10.
