ABILENE, Texas – In a battle of ranked national teams, No. 47 McMurry University dropped a 7-2 decision to No. 16-ranked Abilene Christian University at ACU's Eager Tennis Pavilion on Wednesday.
The War Hawks fell to 8-7 on the year with the loss. The Wildcats improved to 13-14.
ACU jumped out to a 2-1 lead in the team race by taking two of three doubles matches. McM's lone win came from the duo of
Preston Steblein and Christiano Mendes at No. 3 doubles. The tandem topped the Wildcats' Nicklas Wingord and Alfredo Desiati, 8-5.
McMurry dropped five of the six singles bouts, with one loss going three sets and another going to seven games in each set. The War Hawks singles win came from
Casjen Rico at No. 6, where he defeated ACU's Jason Proctor, 6-4, 6-2.
At No. 2 singles, McMurry's
Felipe Cruz lost his first set, 6-4, to Guilherme Gesser, but bounced back to take the second by an identical 6-4 score. Gesser won set three, 10-4.
At No. 5 singles, Mendes and Desiati battled gamely. Desiati would eventually grind out a 7-5, 7-6 (7-2) win over Mendes.
