ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University's men's tennis team suffered its first defeat of the season on Friday, dropping its second match of the day to Western New Mexico University, 7-2. The War Hawks (5-1) had little trouble in their opening match, dispatching of the University of the Southwest, 8-1.
In the match versus USW, McMurry's lone loss was at No. 1 singles. In the Nos. 2-6 contests, Christiano Mendes,
Chris Breaux,
Casjen Rico,
Tom Weir and
Carlos Perez were all victorious in straight sets.
Breaux and Rico teamed up to take No. 1 doubles, followed by
Felipe Cruz and
Preston Steblein at No. 2. No. 3 doubles was handled by
Dani Perez and Weir.
Versus the nationally-ranked WNMU team, the War Hawks found victory at just No. 5 singles and No. 1 doubles. Rico defeated WNMU's Jorge Carretero, 7-5, 6-4 at fifth singles, then teamed with Breaux to win at doubles (8-3).
