War Hawks Fall to #10 Angelo State, 7-2

Box Score ABILENE,  Texas – McMurry University's baseball team received another quality start from its pitching staff, but No. 10-ranked Angelo State University solved its bullpen in scoring the 7-2 win at Walt Driggers Field.

The loss was the third-straight for the War Hawks (4-3), after winning their first four games to open the 2013 campaign.

McMurry sophomore right-hander Caleb Gonzales (1-0) pitched five complete innings, but left without figuring in the decision with a 0-0 score when he departed. Gonzales scattered four hits and struck out five Rams, tossing just 74 pitches.

Junior transfer Trevor Daggon was the next pitcher on in relief. The lefty allowed just an unearned run in the sixth, but the roof fell in during the top of the seventh when he loaded the bases on an infield single and two walks.

With one out in the frame, McM head coach John Byington then went to his bullpen again and summoned Joel DePorte to try to quell the threat. DePorte delivered a 1-1 offering to ASU centerfielder Lee Neumann, who promptly swatted the ball down the rightfield line for a base-clearing triple that made the score 4-0. All three of Neumann's RBI were charged to Daggon (0-2), who absorbed the loss.

Ryan Greer's sacrifice fly plated Neumann as Angelo State upped its advantage to 5-0 through seven innings. ASU added two more in the top of the eighth, to make it 7-0, before McMurry was finally able to get on the board.

With one out in the bottom of the eighth, designated hitter Jeffers Rader struck out swinging. However, ASU catcher David Goggin couldn't hang on to the ball and Rader was able to reach first on the passed ball.

Dylan De Leon followed with a single with Rader holding at second. A wild pitch moved the runners up 90 feet to second and third.  Eric Preuss slapped a 1-1 pitch to rightfield, driving home both runners. Jon Mejia grounded into a 5-4-3 double play to end the inning, 7-2.

McM went down in order in the bottom of the ninth.

Angelo State starter Bryce Zak got the victory after a solid 6 1/3 innings of work. Entering the game with an ERA above 7.00, Zak allowed eight of McM's 10 hits on the afternoon, but no runs. He struck out three and walked two War Hawks.

Preuss had the big day at the plate for McMurry, going 3-for-4 with the two RBI. He also had three putouts and two assists at the “hot corner.”

DeLeon was 2-for-4 with a run, while shortstop Ricky Garcia was also 2-for-4 as the only other McM player with a multi-hit game.

McMurry will next host NCAA II power St. Edward's University in a Friday doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. in the second contest of a five-game homestand.
