Box Score SAN ANGELO, Texas –
Brandon Golden scored a game-high 18 points on 5-of-14 shooting from the field, but the McMurry University offense couldn't keep up with Angelo State University, and dropped a 68-55 decision Tuesday evening.
Trailing 24-20 at halftime, the War Hawks' offense flew out of the gates to start the second half.
Golden (Austin, Texas/Coastal Bend College) hit a trey ball at 19:09 which jump-started a 16-5 McMurry run, which lasted nearly five minutes and The War Hawks led 35-29.
However, just when the War Hawks looked to make a move, the Rams clawed back. ASU (7-0) countered with a 21-6 run at 15:52 in the second half and seized control of the game.
"We expended a lot of energy and fought and got back in it," McM head coach
Clif Carroll said. "We had to sub and I don't think our bench did a good enough job to get enough stops and in the second half we didn't execute."
In the first half the War Hawks shot 30.8 percent (8-of-26) from the field, which proved costly.
"If we make our layups or easy shots in the first half we take a 10-point lead in halftime," added Carroll.
ASU's bench played a pivotal role and outscored McM's bench 35-7.
The Rams won the battle in the paint, outscoring the War Hawks 22-18. ASU also out-rebounded McM 40-29.
Connor Robinson (Austin,Texas/Bowie HS) finished the night with 13 points on 4-of-7 shooting. The junior was also a perfect 5-for-5 from the free-throw line.
Kenny Williams scored 16 points to lead ASU.
McM (4-2) returns to action Thursday night at 7 p.m. and play host to Hillsdale Free Will Baptist (Okla.)
