Men's Basketball Goes For Lone Star Sweep At Tarleton

STEPHENVILLE, Texas – The McMurry University men's basketball program (12-4) will look to extend its winning streak to three games when it takes to the road to take on Tarleton State University (10-6) on Wednesday.

After dropping two games on the road, the War Hawks returned home last week and took care of business, defeating Oklahoma Panhandle State (83-57) and Texas – Permian Basin (67-57), to improve to 7-0 in the friendly confines of Kimbrell Arena.

In their previous contest against UTPB, the War Hawks were led for the first time this season by Alfred Perez, who notched 15 points. Chris Campbell added 12 points in the game, and Takoby Jackson finished with 11. Connor Robinson finished the game with eight points, eight rebounds and seven assists and Kaylim Noel finished with nine points.

So far this season, Jackson leads the team in points per game, scoring 13.0. Antonio Bell is also averaging double figures with 11.4. As a team, the War Hawks are scoring 73.3 points per game and rank second in the Heartland Conference in field goal percentage, shooting .478 on the year.

Over the past two games, the War Hawks have started to share the ball very well, registering more assists than turnovers in each of their last two contests. Moving the ball well has also helped McM shoot over 50 percent in its last two games.

On the defensive side of the ball, McMurry currently ranks first in the Heartland Conference in opponents points per game, as teams are scoring just 63.3 points per contest. They also rank third in opponents' field goal percentage (.409) and opponents' three-point percentage (.314).

On the other side of the ball, Tarleton State comes into the contest with an overall record of 10-6, having won its past two contests. In their previous game, the Texans defeated Texas A&M – Commerce, 70-61. Coleman Furst led the way in the contest with 18 points.

Furst leads three Texans' players in double figures with 11.2 points per game. Chuck Guy is scoring 11.0 and De'Andre Upchurch is averaging 10.9 points per contest. As a team, Tarleton State is averaging 63.8 points per game, but is holding its opponents to just 59.2 points per contest, which ranks second in the Lone Star Conference.

For the record, when McMurry faces Tarleton on Wednesday, it will be the fourth time that the War Hawks have squared off against a Lone Star Conference opponent. McM will be looking for the “Lone Star sweep” as it is 3-0 against the LSC, having defeated Cameron (76-56), Texas A&M Kingsville (61-46) and the conference-leader, University of the Incarnate Word (76-68) already this season.

So far this season, McM is outscoring its Lone Star opponents, 71.0-56.7 and have also held a big advantage on the glass (41.3-25.7).

This game marks the 52nd meeting between McMurry and Tarleton State with the War Hawks holding an impressive, 38-13, advantage. However, this is the first meeting between the two programs since the 1996-97 season, a game which Tarleton State won, 66-56.
