ABILENE, Texas – Behind a career-day from
Takoby Jackson, the McMurry University men's basketball team (11-4) lead wire-to-wire in an 83-57 victory over Oklahoma Panhandle State University (4-14) on Thursday.
McMurry scored the first bucket of the game on a jumper from
Dominick Walker and never looked back as they ran out to a 24-7 lead over the first nine minutes of action. Jackson was a big key in the run, scoring 12 of the team's first 24 points.
The lead the rest of the way in the first half would get to as high as 17 points before the War Hawks went into the half with a 14-point advantage, 40-26.
McM dominated the opening frame as they registered 22 points in the paint and took advantage of 13 points off of Aggie turnovers. Jackson finished the first half with 18 points while
Antonio Bell chipped in with six.
In the second half, the Aggies would cut the lead as close as eight points on a three by Krys Randolph, to make the score 48-40 with 15:34 left to play. However, McMurry would outscore OPSU 35-17 over the rest of the game to finish with a 26-point advantage, 83-57.
Jackson finished the contest with a career-high, 27 points. He was 8-of-13 from the field and also shot 9-of-10 from the charity stripe. The game, however, was not won by just one player, as every War Hawk that entered the contest scored at least one basket.
DJ Stennis finished the contest with 11 points and
Alfred Perez added 10.
Bell finished the game with eight points.
Chris Campbell added six on the day, while
Brock Kimball scored five points in the contest. Walker,
Connor Robinson and
AJ Peralta all added four points, and
Kaylim Noel and
Thomas Brandsma added a bucket each.
McMurry played an efficient game, shooting 55 percent over the course of the contest and 87 percent from the charity stripe. The team also finished with 19 assists and just 13 turnovers. Robinson had five assists on the day while Peralta and Jackson added four each.
Defensively, the War Hawks forced 23 Aggie turnovers which led to 29 points. They also held OPSU to just 29 percent from behind the three-point line, and just over 40 percent shooting, overall.
McM will be back in action on Saturday, January 26 when they play host to the Falcons of the University of Texas – Permian Basin. The contest is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.
