Men's Basketball Falls, 78-70, To TAMIU

Box Score LAREDO, Texas – The McMurry University men's basketball team saw its' five-game winning streak come to an end, as it was defeated, 78-70, by Texas A&M International University on Thursday night.

The Dustdevils jumped out on the War Hawks early hitting four of their first five shots, including three from long range. Riding that momentum, TAMIU pushed their early lead to as many as nine points (18-9) on a three-point basket by Danny Ross.

Over the next ten minutes of play, the War Hawks would continue to steadily chip away at the lead and finally overtook the Dustdevils, on a three-point play by DJ Stennis, which gave McMurry the 35-33 lead with 3:56 to go in the half.

Four different players would score in the final three minutes for McMurry as they ballooned the lead to 11 points on a three by Stennis with 8 seconds to go. However, a foul at the end of the half gave TAMIU three free-throws, and cut the lead to eight heading into the half.

Unfortunately for the War Hawks, the second half belonged to the Dustdevils, as TAMIU outscored McM 40-24 in the second frame. The Dustdevils chipped away at the McMurry lead throughout the first 13 minutes of the half, and pulled even, 62-62, on a jumper by Johnel Grey.

Takoby Jackson immediately responded with a jumper to put the War Hawks up by two. However, the jumper by Jackson would be the last bucket the War Hawks would score for over nine minutes.

TAMIU outscored McMurry 16-6 the rest of the way, and the War Hawks fell for just the third time this season.

Offensively, McM was led by Jackson's game-high, 24-points. Alfred Perez finished the game with 14 points and eight rebounds, and Antonio Bell finished with 13.

The War Hawks will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to San Antonio to take on the Rattlers of St. Mary's Univeristy. The contest is scheduled to follow the women's game,  which is scheduled for 2 p.m.
