BELTON, Texas – The fate of the McMurry University baseball team's post-season aspirations has come down to the final weekend of the regular season versus the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.
The three-game series begins with a single game on Friday evening (7 p.m.) and concludes with a Saturday doubleheader (1 p.m.). Saturday's twinbill can be heard live in the Abilene area on KWKC 1340 AM or via the War Hawks' web site (mcmurrysports.com).
The basic weekend math for McMurry (18-19, 11-7 ASC West) is this: win one game and it is guaranteed to be in the American Southwest Conference post-season tournament as one of the four West Division representatives. Win twice and the team would solidify the No. 3 seed. However, if McM were to lose all three games, its fate would depend on what Hardin-Simmons does in its series versus Howard Payne University.
“Like anytime we play our goal is to win the series,” McM head coach
John Byington said. “First, we want to win one game. We are taking them one game at a time.
“We know Mary Hardin-Baylor is am good team and we are on the road, so it is defiantly going to be a challenge.”
Offensively, senior first baseman
Matt Thompson enters the series flirting with a .400 season batting average. Thompson is currently hitting .397 and tops the team in most categories, whether with the bat, on the bases or with the glove.
Dylan De Leon (.376 BA) and
Connor Griffith (.365 BA) have also had hot bats of late.
Junior righthander
Spencer Smith is expected to open the series for McMurry. Smith has a 5-2 record and a 4.20 earned run average for his 70 2/3 innings pitched. He has struck out 50 opponents and walked 35.
