Baseball Tops Texas Lutheran, 7-3; Remains Unblemished in ASC West

SEGUIN, Texas – McMurry University's baseball team remained unblemished in American Southwest Conference West Division play with a 7-3 victory at Texas Lutheran University. The War Hawks (12-12, 7-0 ASC West) and Bulldogs (13-9, 4-3 ASC West) both banged out nine hits in the series opener.

McMurry scored all of its runs in the first three innings of the game off of TLU ace Brad Orosey. Orosey, who last week set the ASC all-time strikeout record, managed just two “K's” versus the War Hawks and gave up seven hits in 2 1/3 innings. He was charged with five earned runs in the abbreviated stint.

McMurry catcher Bradd Baker went 2-for-4 in his first game back in the lineup after missing three games following an ejection in last weekend's series versus Sul Ross State. Baker scored one run and drove in a pair, as well.

Senior second baseman Marcellous Biggins went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Freshman Connor Griffith had a double and senior Brian Durst smacked a triple to account for the War Hawks' extra-base hits.

Durst's three-bagger led off the game and he came around to score when the very next batter, Kory Moench, grounded out to second.

In the second frame for McM, Nick Marsh singled, Jarryl Carley walked and Baker singled to center for an RBI and an error by TLU's Daniel Harvey in the outfield allowed Carley and Marsh to score, 3-0, with Baker taking third.

Biggins and Dylan De Leon would both eventually add RBI singles in the inning to make it 5-0.

In the third, Griffith led off with his double and – with one out – Carley singled to center to drive him home. Carley stole second and came around on Baker's single to center.

Junior right-hander Spencer Smith improved his personal record to 4-2 on the year in recording the win. Smith went 7 1/3 innings, allowing all nine hits and two earned runs.  He struck out three and walked three.

David Towler came on in relief to get the final two outs in the eighth. Deen Coleman struggled early in the ninth – hitting two batters, walking one and throwing a wild pitch that allowed one run – but settled down to record a pair of strikeouts in closing the game.

The two teams will play a doubleheader at noon on Saturday to close out the series. The games can be heard live in Abilene on KZQQ 1560 AM or via the War Hawks web site at: www.mcmurrysports.com/showcase.
