ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University's baseball team saw its winning streak halted at nine games, with an 18-6 loss at the hands of the University of Texas-Dallas on Tuesday afternoon at Walt Driggers Field.
The setback left the War Hawks at 11-12 overall, while the Comets improved to 15-9 on the year.
UTD, currently in second in the American Southwest Conference East Division race, had no trouble dispatching McMurry, which sits atop the ASC West. The Comets out-hit McM by an 18-8 margin on a day when both teams pre-planned to “pitch by committee” for divisional cross-over midweek bout. In all, Dallas used five hurlers, while the War Hawks threw six pitchers.
Charlie Hejny took the loss and went the first two innings. Hejny gave up four hits and six runs (just three of which were earned).
The Comets got almost all the runs they would need in the very first inning, crossing the plate six times. A three-spot in the third and a five-run fourth sealed the War Hawks' fate.
Senior second baseman
Marcellous Biggins went 2-for-4 with two runs scored to pace McMurry's hitting. Junior outfielder
Dylan De Leon was the only other War Hawk with more than one hit, going 2-for-5 on the day.
McMurry will return to ASC West Division play this weekend with a three-game series at Texas Lutheran University. The slate begins Friday afternoon with a 2 p.m. single game, followed by a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at Noon.
