ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University's rally fell short Friday and the War Hawks fell 2-1 to UT-Tyler at Edwards Field in the American Southwest Conference opener.
Ian McCarthy scored in the 61st minute for McMurry to cut the lead to one, but the Patriots held off any further comeback attempt to take the win.
UT-Tyler scored in the 34th and 59th minutes to jump out to a 2-0 lead. Jake Urbaniak took a pass and scored from the left-side of the box from Victor Almendariz to start off the scoring. Then, Alonso Rivera scored on a breakaway in the 59th minute for the game-winner.
McCarthy's first goal of the season came on thru-ball pass from
Ryan Prince and McCarthy shot it up and over the outstretched hands of Sergio Gardea into the net for McMurry.
The Patriots finished the game with 18 shots and 10 on goal while McMurry was held to five and two respectively. Gardea saved a shot and allowed a goal in the win for UT-Tyler while
Zack Brewer saved eight shots and allowed two goals in the losing effort.
UT-Tyler improved to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play while McMurry fell to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in league play. The War Hawks resume ASC action Saturday at home against Concordia-Texas.
