McMurry splits with Sul Ross State; men extend win streak to 10

ALPINE, Texas – McMurry University's men's tennis team extended its win streak to 10 matches and opened American Southwest Conference West Division play with a victory over Sul Ross State Saturday in Alpine by a score of 9-0. On the women's side the Lobos defeated McMurry 5-4 to begin league play.

Daniel Olivares took over the No. 1 singles spot as Chris Bumman sat out, but Olivares delivered with a 6-2, 6-2 victory. The War Hawks won all their matches in two sets on the singles court.

Adam Ewing and Bryan Rainwater teamed up on the No. 1 doubles court for an 8-4 win, Olivares and Chris Breaux won 8-0 on the No. 2 doubles court and Tony Williams matched up with Preston Steblein to win 8-1 in the No. 3 doubles court.

On the women's side, McMurry took two of three matches on the doubles court, however the Lobos took four on the singles court including two matches in three sets to take the victory.

Hilary Stone and Chelsea Miller teamed up for a 9-8 win on the No. 2 doubles court while Gavee Olsen and Lacey Krusmark won the on the No. 3 doubles court, 8-2. However on the No. 4 and No. 5 singles court respectively, Chelsea Miller and Rachel Smith each were edged in three sets.

Hilary Stone and Autumn Patterson each won their singles matches on the No. 3 and No. 6 spots on the singles court. The women's team fell to 3-12 overall and 0-1 in league play. The men's team improved to 14-1 on the season and moved to 1-0 in league play.

Both teams return to action in Belton Friday against Mary Hardin-Baylor at 1 p.m. before heading home to play host to Trinity April 9 in non-conference action at 9 a.m.
