TYLER, Texas – The No. 5-ranked UT-Tyler Patriots swept a pair of games with McMurry University at Irwin Field by scores of 5-2 and 7-3 Tuesday. The Patriots moved to 33-4 overall while McMurry dropped to 14-23 on the season.
In game one, UT-Tyler scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a two-all tie on two RBI singles from Chad Sherman Sherman and Nick Clifton while Landon Baker scored on a fielder's choice to give the Patriots a three-run advantage. The War Hawks were retired in order in the top of the seventh by Sheets who picked up the win in 1.2 innings of relief. McMurry's
Stephen Greenwood picked up the loss in relief of
Jake Mullin to fall to 0-4 on the season.
In game two, UT-Tyler picked up where it left off in game one by scoring three runs in the first inning to jump ahead. A run in the third inning would be all the Patriots would need, but the home team added two runs in the fourth and one in the seventh to add insurance.
McMurry spread out its three runs in game two with a run in each of the second, sixth and seventh innings.
Greg Guse collected three hits while
Hunter Lane and
Walt Williams each had two hits apiece in the losing effort for the War Hawks.
The Patriots' Jordon Vierra and Jake Beam each drove home two runs in the victory and Jack Barkley was credited with the win on the mound to move to 4-1 after pitching six innings on the mound.
The 23 losses for McMurry surpasses the school record for losses in a season set by last season's squad when the War Hawks finished 21-21. McMurry is on the hook for its first losing season in school history since bringing back the program in 1996.
The War Hawks, however, have clinched a spot in the American Southwest Conference postseason Tournament for the eighth-straight year and will close the regular season Thursday and Friday with a three-game set with ASC West Division foe Hardin-Simmons to help determine seeding. McMurry, at 10-8 in league play, can finish no worse than fourth and no better than second. HSU is still in the running for the ASC West title with a 13-5 mark in conference play, which is one game behind the division leader Concordia-Texas.
