ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University clinched its eighth-straight trip to the American Southwest Conference Postseason Baseball Tournament with a Saturday sweep of Sul Ross State at Walt Driggers Field. The War Hawks took a pitcher's duel 1-0 in game one and closed the three-game set with a 10-1 victory over the Lobos.
McMurry improved to 14-21 on the season with a 10-8 mark in ASC West Division play while Sul Ross State dropped out of the postseason race falling to 14-18 overall and 6-12 in league play. The three-game sweep over Friday and Saturdy of Sul Ross State was the first sweep of the Lobos for McMurry since 2007.
Spencer Smith pitched a 3-hit shutout in the first game and Zack Matthys threw seven shutout innings in game two to help sweep. The War Hawks clinched with the sweep and Howard Payne's victory over Mary Hardin-Baylor ensured that McMurry would win fourth place with any tiebreaker no matter the results of the remaining three ASC West contests.
McMurry will play a doubleheader against UT-Tyler in Tyler Tuesday before closing the regular season with its final three-game ASC West series with Hardin-Simmons Thursday and Friday.
Game Two: McMurry 10 Sul Ross State 1
Zack Matthys built off 
Spencer Smith's solid start with seven shutout innings of his own and the McMurry bats woke up as the War Hawks swept the series with a 10-1 victory in game two.
The freshman, Matthys, picked up his first victory of the season allowing only three hits, no runs, he walked three and struck out eight to move to 1-2 on the season. 
Logan Edge and 
Jordan Mattke pitched the eighth and ninth innings respectively with the Lobos getting just one run in the bottom of the ninth on a Brian Lalima RBI single.
McMurry's offense collected 13 hits and 
Austin Brooks led the team with three RBI's while 
Clay Schubert added two runs and two RBI's. The War Hawks set the tone with a four-run first inning in the bottom half thanks to an RBI double from 
Matt Thompson, and RBI single by Schubert and a two-run single from Brooks.
Luke Fry picked up the loss for the Lobos to fall to 4-4 on the season. 
Game One: McMurry 1 Sul Ross State 0
Spencer Smith and Trey Polston exchanged punches on the mound, but the War Hawks came out with the 1-0 decision to ensure a series victory in game one of the doubleheader. Smith went the distance and picked up the win to move to 4-1 on the season in a 3-hit shutout effort.
Smith walked only one and struck out six and faced only four batters over the minimum in his first career complete game. McMurry picked up its only run in the third inning when 
Brian Durst scored 
Bradd Baker after Baker reached on an error.
Polston pitched well in the loss allowing only four McMurry hits, he allowed the one unearned run, walked one and struck out one to fall to 2-3 on the year.
