Andrew Bell hit his first career home run to help McMurry get in the win column in American Southwest Conference West Division play. The War Hawks defeated the Crusaders 5-0 in a game that took two hours and 38 minutes to complete but spanned 19 and-a-half hours due to rain and lightning suspension.
With one out in the top of the fourth inning Friday night at Walt Driggers Field, lightning in the area caused the game to be delayed, followed by a brief rain storm. However, the lightning didn't cease and the game was scheduled to be resumed Saturday.
Hewitt didn't lose form coming back Saturday to complete a five-hit shutout, his third complete game of his 3-year career. He finished the game with just two walks and four strikeouts to move to 3-1 on the season. The goose egg was also the first nine-inning complete game shutout thrown by a McMurry pitcher since Clint Johnston shutout Schreiner March 28, 2008.
Bell's home run came Friday night, a two-run shot over the leftfield wall and Bell finished the game with two hits and two RBI.
