TLU snaps McMurry's four-game win streak, 66-55

SEGUIN, Texas – Texas Lutheran snapped McMurry's four-game win streak and nixed visitors hopes of tying for first place in the American Southwest Conference West Division with Mary Hardin-Baylor by defeating the visitors 66-55 Monday night at Memorial Gymnasium.

McMurry committed 20 turnovers, shot just 18 of 53 from the field and converted on only 16 of 26 free-throw opportunities in the loss. The Bulldogs' stayed mathematically in the race for one of the top four spots in the ASC West with the victory moving to 8-9 in league play. With four games to spare, TLU trails Concordia-Texas (11-6) by three games for the fourth spot.

Isaac Williams scored 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the winning effort on a 10 of 21 shooting performance. In addition, as McMurry tried to make a run late, Michael Flores hit five of his six free throws in the final 1:10 to give him 13 points on the evening.

McMurry's Derick Sumpter scored 20 points and Steven Johunkin added 13 points. However, Steven Jones, McMurry's leading scorer, was limited to a season-low five points and the Bulldogs' defense also held Jaden Isler to only two points.

After leading 30-27 at halftime, McMurry turned the ball over in five of its first six possessions to begin the second half, and Texas Lutheran took advantage never trailing again after Williams hit a go-ahead layup with 16:27 left in the game.

McMurry fought back to tie the score at 14 when Sumpter hit a free throw with 11:31 to play. However, Williams' layup on the next possession gave the Bulldogs the lead for good.

The loss dropped McMurry to 14-7 overall and 12-5 in league play putting the team a full game behind the ASC West leading Mary Hardin-Baylor Crusaders with four games to spare.

Concordia-Texas comes to Abilene to face McMurry Thursday at Kimbrell at 7:30 p.m.
