SAN ANTONIO – McMurry Unviersity's men's tennis team rolled to a 4-0 start on the season and picked up its second win over an NCAA Division II school defeating St. Mary's Friday afternoon, 5-4. McMurry swept doubles and took crucial wins on the No. 3 and No. 5 singles courts for the victory.
Bryan Rainwater and Chris Bumann teamed up for an 8-5 win on the No. 1 doubles court. Then, in a tough match on the No. 2 doubles court, McMurry's
Daniel Olivares and Chris Breaux took a 9-8 win with a 7-3 tiebreaker win. Michael Parker teamed up with Adam Ewing to take an 8-2 win in the No. 3 slot as McMurry entered singles play up 3-0.
St. Mary's took wins with the top two spots, but
Bryan Rainwater's three-set victory over Guy Rutten on the No. 3 court and Ewing's 6-4, 6-4 win on the No. 5 court assured the victory. Rainwater fell in the first set 6-3 before taking a 7-5 win in set two and edged St. Mary's Guy Rutten 7-6 in the third set with an 8-6 nod in the tiebreaker.
The Rattlers took a 9-0 win over McMurry in women's action. Both the McMurry men and women will face NCAA Division II Incarnate Word Saturday in San Antonio.
