ABILENE, Texas – McMurry Unviersity upset No. 21-ranked UT-Tyler and then followed by beating NCAA Division II Dalllas Baptist at the Seidel-Swagerty Tennis Center. McMurry defeated the UT-Tyler Patriots 6-3 before beating the Dallas Baptist Patriots 8-2 to move to 3-0 on the season.
On the doubles court against UT-Tyler, McMurry took the top two doubles matches while winning the No. 1, 3, 4 and 5 singles matches to down the three-time defending American Southwest Conference champions. In addition, McMurry had never defeated UT-Tyler before today's meeting.
Chris Bumman and
Bryan Rainwater teamed up for a 8-6 win on the doubles court while
Daniel Olivares and Chris Breaux defeated UTT's tande 8-6 as well. Then Bumman, Olivares, Rainwater and Adam Ewing all won singles matches in two sets. Ewing and Michael Parker nearly helped McMurry sweep doubles, but UT-Tyler's Kevin Singer and Edward Timponi won 9-8 with an 8-6 tiebreaker.
Against DBU, McMurry swept doubles with the top two pairs the same and the No. 3 doubles set of
Tony Williams and Preston Steblein taking victories. DBU's Phillip Allen scored the team's only point in a 6-3, 6-2 win over Parker on the No. 2 singles court. Bumman, Rainwater, Breaux, Ewing and Steblein took victories on the singles court.
Both UT-Tyler and DBU's women defeated McMurry 9-0.
Chelsea Miller took UTT's Ashley Albro to three sets on the No. 4 single court but fell 3-6, 6-2, 10-2.
McMurry returns to action Friday and Saturday in San Antonio where the teams will take on Trinity, Our Lady of the Lake and NCAA Division II Incarnate Word.
