War Hawks open season at home against Southwestern Adventist University

Keshia Collins returns as McMurry's leading scorer from the 2010-11 season

ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University opens up its 2011-12 season with a home game against Southwestern Adventist University Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. in Kimbrell Arena. The War Hawks return six players that played a major role in last years third place finish in the American Southwest Conference West Division.
 
The team recorded the best scoring defense in the 2010-11 season allowing just 57.3 points per contest, and was first in the league in blocked shots with 143. Former player Anna Berthel recorded 78 of the teams 143 blocks. The War Hawks were picked to finish third in the ASC West Division preseason poll.
 
The team returns leading scorer Keshia Collins recording 10.4 points per game last season. Collins was second on the team in rebounds (144) and first on the team in steals (59). The sophomore was named the ASC West Division Freshman of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year for her efforts in the 2010-11 season.
 
Junior Rikeita Thomas returns as the commander of the offense running the point for the third straight year. Thomas was honored on the ASC Second Team All-Conference last season for her efforts. She averaged 9 points per game, and led the team with 68 assists on the year. Junior Andi Lukaszewski returns as the third leading scorer for the War Hawks offense averaging 6.5 points per match. In a contest against Texas Lutheran University Lukaszewski recorded 27 points recording six three point buckets.
 
McMurry will carry one senior on the team in Celeste Belizario. She played in 23 contests last season recorded 48 points shooting 34 percent from the floor off the bench. In her limited playing time she recorded 64 boards and six blocks.
 
The team recorded a 16-10 overall and 14-7 conference record to earn a spot in last seasons ASC Championship Tournament. McMurry lost in the first round of the ASC tournament to Texas-Dallas.
 
Southwestern Adventist University is a NCCAA school out of Keene, Texas. The small school of 790 students travels to Abilene Saturday to take on the War Hawks in their home opener.
