ABILENE, Texas – McMurry put Hardin-Simmons on the ropes early and completed the regular season sweep of the Cowboys with a convincing 88-51 victory Monday at Kimbrell Arena. The win broke a 10-4 league-record tie in the American Southwest Conference between the cross-town rivals and puts McMurry in a first-place tie with Mary-Hardin-Baylor at 11-4 while HSU drops into third place with a half-game lead over Concordia-Texas.
McMurry jumped out to an 18-7 lead to start the game, led by 18 at halftime at 41-23, and continued to pour it on outscoring the Cowboys 47-28 in the second half. In addition, McMurry kept HSU's and the ASC's leading scorer, Matt Addison, to a season-low 15 points. HSU shot only 28 percent for the entire contest and shot just 7 for 30 from beyond the 3-point arc.
Derick Sumpter led a balanced scoring effort with a season-high 20 points to accompany seven rebounds and three assists.
Steven Jones added his second-straight double-double with 19 points, 11 rebounds five assists and four steals while
Teddy Chambers posted a double-double as well with 11 points and 12 boards.
Steven Johunkin scored 10 points and the only starter to not score in double figures was
Jaden Isler who had nine and tied for the team lead with five assists.
McMurry shot a scorching 55 percent from the floor and 7 for 17 from long range. McMurry won nearly every facet of the game out-rebounding the Cowboys 50-29, winning the points in the paint battle 34-12 and outscored HSU on the fast break 18-4.
In the losing effort Addison led with 15 points on a 5 of 17 shooting performance, and Dustin Massey scored 13 for HSU.
McMurry moved to 13-6 overall and 11-4 in league play while Hardin-Simmons fell to 11-8 and 10-5 respectively. McMurry takes to the road to face Schreiner in Kerrville Thursday and Texas Lutheran in Seguin Saturday.
