ABILENE, Texas – McMurry shot 74 percent from the floor in the first half and used that effort to lead by 33 points at half before taking a 99-71 victory over Sul Ross State Saturday at Kimbrell Arena.
Steven Jones and
Teddy Chambers had season highs with 23 and 21 points respectively for McMurry to lead the team to the American Southwest Conference victory.
McMurry hit 25 of 34 shots from the floor in the first half including 5 of 7 from beyond the 3-point arc and led the Lobos 61-28 at intermission. McMurry finished the game at 66 percent from the floor on a 42 of 64 shooting effort. For the second-straight game all five McMurry starters scored in double figures with
Steven Johunkin,
Derick Sumpter and
Jaden Isler adding 14, 11 and 10 points respectively.
Jones had one of his best all-around games of the season with seven rebounds seven assists and two blocks to go with his 10 of 17 shooting effort. Chambers was 9 for 11 from the floor and Johhunkin added five assists and six boards against his former team.
McMurry managed a season-low in turnovers with only eight miscues. Sul Ross State outscored McMurry 43-38 in the second half but couldn't overcome a 33-percent shooting in the first half. Jimmy Martinez scored 22 points and Travis Johnson scored 14 in the losing effort for the Lobos.
Part of McMurry's success in the first-half was due to its up-tempo style that led eventually to the home team outscoring the Lobos on the fast break 16-2 for the contest. McMurry dominated the paint as well winning the battle 58-20 and won the rebound battle 35-28.
Sul Ross State fell to 6-8 overall and 5-6 in league play while McMurry improved to 9-5 overall and 7-3 in ASC competition. McMurry hits the road Thursday and takes on Concordia-Texas at 7:30 p.m.
