ABILENE, Texas - The McMurry men's tennis team has moved to 2-0 in American Southwest Conference West Division play with a convincing 8-1 victory over Mary Hardin-Baylor last weekend while the women fell to the Lady Crusaders 7-2 to move to 1-1 in league play.
On the men's side, it was a clean sweep on the singles court with
Will Davis,
Bryan Rainwater,
Daniel Olivares,
Tony Williams,
Brent Abilez and
Levi Cockrill taking wins respectively.
On the doubles court, Davis and Rainwater suffered just their second loss all season to an NCAA Division III doubles pair when Joshua Pownall and Daniel White edged McMurry's top pair 8-5.
Cockrill teamed up with Olivares and Abilez and Williams each took wins on the doubles court to remain undefeated in ASC West play. Cockrill and Olivares won 8-2 while Abilez and Williams took a match over the Crusaders 8-6.
The men moved to 8-5 overall and 2-0 in league play while UMHB's men fell to 7-4 overall and 3-2 in league play. McMurry, the defending ASC West champs are tied for Howard Payne for first place. HPU has the slight advantage at 3-0 in league play at this point in the season.
On the women's side, both of McMurry's points came on the singles court with
Hilary Stone and
Rachel Smith each taking wins from the No. 5 and No. 6 courts respectively. Stone edged out a three-set victory 6-2, 5-7, 10-5 while Smith won 6-3, 6-1. Stone moved to 7-4 on the season in singles play while Smith moved to 6-3. On the No. 4 singles court,
Chelsea Miller narrowly lost to UMHB's Amber Long in a three-set match falling 6-3, 4-6, 8-10.
McMurry's women fell to 6-6 overall and moved to 1-1 in ASC West play while UMHB improved to 8-5 overall and 4-1 in ASC west competition.
Both teams will face Schreiner Friday and Texas Lutheran Saturday to continue ASC West competition while both teams will also play Trinity University Friday in a non-conference match.
