TEMPLE, Texas - McMurry didn't get the sweep but it settled for taking the series with a Saturday split with Concordia-Texas at Temple Junior College Field. McMurry took the second game 8-5 in the seven-inning affair before the Tornados took the series finale in the bottom of the ninth, 5-4.
McMurry moved to 14-15 overall and 7-5 in American Southwest Conference West Division play. CTX moved to 13-17 overall and 6-6 in the ASC West. The series completed the fourth of seven series in the ASC West leaving McMurry in third place out of eight teams and the Tornados in a three-way tie for fourth place. The ASC Postseason Tournament, which begins the first weekend in May takes the top four teams from each division.
Below is a recap of each of Saturday's games:
Game 1 - McMurry 8 Concordia-Texas 5 Box Score
Jake Mullin drove in three runs,
Dakota Smith picked up his fifth win of the season, and McMurry scored five runs in the fourth inning to help McMurry take the second game of the three-game series over Concordia-Texas 8-5.
McMurry trailed 3-2 after three innings before the visitors scored five runs on six hits in the top of the fourth to take a 7-3 advantage.
Michael Falcone,
Michael Dibiasi, and
Dylan De Leon each hit run-scoring singles before Mullin drove home two runs with a two-out single to cap the top of the fourth.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Tornados cut the lead to two when Alec Carter hit a two-run single. However, McMurry added an insurance run in the sixth when De Leon drove home his second run of the game to help the team go up 8-5.
From there, Chris Maldanado and
Cory Davis combined for the final two innings and held the Tornados scoreless. Davis picked up his first save of the season recording the final two outs of the contest to ensure McMurry took the series.
Smith threw five innings, allowed five hits, no earned runs in five surrendered, walked on and struck out three to move to 5-2 on the season. Collin Butscheck picked up the loss on the mound to fall to 4-3 on the season.
Mullin went 3 for 4 with three RBI, De Leon was 2 for 4 with two RBI and Dibiasi drove in two runs with two hits as well.
Game 2 - Concordia-Texas 5 McMurry 4 Box Score
Much like Friday night's win, McMurry made a comeback in the late innings, but this time Concordia-Texas rebounded with a run in the eighth to tie the score and C.J. Riojas hit the game-winning single in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Tornados took its only game of the series in the finale, 5-4.
McMurry trailed 3-1 before a three-run eighth inning where
Jake Mullin doubled home a run,
Jeff Jackson hit a sacrifice fly to drive in
Dylan De Leon, and Mullin scored on an error to help McMurry take a 4-3 lead.
However, CTX scored the game-tying run on an error in the field by McMurry. In the ninth, McMurry moved De Leon from third base to the mound. The Tornados loaded the bases before Rojas hit an 0-1 single to centerfield and Robert Brown scored the winning run.
De Leon picked up the loss to move to 2-1 on the season while Russell Johns took the win in relief to move to 3-1 on the season. Mullin led McMurry with three hits and extended his hitting streak to 13 games.
Series Notes:
• 2010 marks the fifth-straight season that McMurry has taken the series from Concordia-Texas - formerly known as Concordia-Austin. CTX last took the series in 2005 when it swept McMurry.

Jake Mullin's third hit in the second game Saturday was career-hit No. 110, which ranks him 20th all-time on McMurry's career list.
