Surging McMurry squad sweeps Howard Payne

ABILENE, Texas – McMurry completed its second-straight three-game sweep at home in the American Southwest Conference West Division by taking the Saturday doubleheader at Walt Driggers Field from Howard Payne with scores of 5-4 and 9-7 respectively.

Dakota Smith and Chris Semchenko each picked up wins on the mound and Cory Davis saved both ball games to help McMurry move to 18-15 overall on the season and 10-5 in league play. Howard Payne fell to 15-17 overall and 4-11 in conference play.

McMurry has won 12 of its last 15 games.

Below is a recap of each game:

Game 1 (McMurry 5 Howard Payne 4) - Box Score

Dakota Smith shook off a three-run 34-pitch inning in the top of the first, and the senior right-hander held on for his sixth win of the season and helped McMurry ensure that it would take the series over Howard Payne with a 5-4 win in game one of Saturday's doubleheader.

The Yellow Jackets took advantage of three walks by Smith in the top of the first and scored three runs including a steal of home plate. Then, in the third, HPU added its last run of the ball game when Taylor Zambreski singled home a run to extend the Yellow Jackets' lead to 4-0.

However, the home team countered with four runs in the bottom of the third. Dylan De Leon singled home a run, Jake Mullin hit a sacrifice fly to drive home a run, Matt Thompson hit a run-scoring single and Jeff Jackson drove home a run with a triple to tie the score at four.

In the fifth, Jackson added his second RBI to drive home the winning run when Mullin crossed the plate for the go ahead run.

Smith finished with six innings pitched, he surrendered five hits, four runs, walked three and struck out three to move to 6-2 on the season. Cory Davis came on in relief to pick up his third save of the season throwing in the seventh inning. He allowed a hit, but didn't allow the run to score and struck out one.

Will Hood threw the complete game in the loss allowing seven hits, five runs, he walked one and struck out one to fall to 3-4 on the season.

Game 2 (McMurry 9 Howard Payne 7) - Box Score

Chris Semchenko threw 7.2 innings of solid baseball and Cory Davis nixed a three-run rally in the ninth inning and McMurry completed a three-game sweep of Howard Payne in the series finale Saturday.

McMurry spread out nine runs on 17 hits highlighted by Jake Mullin's three RBI. Mullin extended his hitting streak to 16 games and hit his team-leading seventh home run of the season. Brian Durst, Dylan De Leon, Matt Thompson, Jaff Jackson, Colby Walding and Greg Guse all drove in runs.

Howard Payne scored five runs in the final two innings including three runs in the top of the ninth off reliever Jordan Brown. However, Cory Davis came in for the second-straight game and pitched the final two thirds of an inning to record his fourth save of the season and keep HPU from getting any closer.

Semchenko finished with 7.2 innings pitched, gave up four runs (three earned), walked three and struck out eight to move to 4-1 on the season. Jonathan Morris picked up the loss for the Yellow Jackets allowing four runs in the first 2.1 innings.
