ABILENE, Texas - McMurry University's tennis teams began American Southwest Conference West Division play with victories over Sul Ross State Saturday with the men taking a 9-0 win while the women won 8-1.
The men, last year's ASC West champs, swept through the Lobos with every player winning in two sets on the singles court and the doubles teams for McMurry allowed at most two points from SRS.
Bryan Rainwater,
Daniel Olivares,
Tony Williams,
Brent Abilez,
Levi Cockrill and
Andy Bonau won singles matches against the Lobos. Rainwater and
Will Davis teamed up to win on the No. 1 doubles court 8-1. Olivaries and Cockrill combined to defeat the Lobos on the No. 2 doubles court 8-1. The tandem of Abilez and Williams took an 8-2 win in the No. 3 spot.
On the women's side,
Lindsey Bloomer,
Gavee Olsen,
Chelsea Miller, Hillary Stone and
Rachel Smith took wins on the singles court. McMurry swept the doubles court with Miller and Bloomer teaming up for victory on the No. 1 court. Olsen and Stone won on the No. 2 court and
Whitney Zugai and Karlie Dieterich won 8-4 on the doubles court.
Each team played NCAA Division II East Central University Sunday and the Tigers swept McMurry's men 9-0 while the women fell 8-1. The women's doubles team of Olsen and Stone took a win from the Tigers on the No. 2 doubles court.
