McMurry's men fifth after day one of indoor nationals

GREENCASTLE, Ind. – McMury University's men are in fifth place after the first day of the 2010 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships. Two pole vaulters and a long jumper for McMurry earned all-America status with three events remaining Saturday for McMurry to score points and try to move up the ladder.

Cory Altenberg earned all-America status Friday placing fourth in the men's pole vault with a jump of 16-05.50. His teammate, Thomas Dimitri was also an all-American in the pole vault placing eighth with a jump of 15-07.75.

Gavan Bass turned in a fourth-place finish with his jump of 22-10.50 in the men's long jump. For the sophomore, it was the third all-America award that Bass has won. He was an all-American in both the indoor and outdoor long jump as a freshman. Bass will also get a chance to take all-America status in the 55-meter dash after he ran the fifth-best time in the preliminary round Friday with a time of 6.43 seconds; the finals are Saturday.

Kevin Cunningham will also advance to the finals Saturday in the 400-meter dash after running a 49.77 in the preliminaries Friday. Cunningham's time was the seventh-best time in Friday's heats and the finals are scheduled for 2:55 p.m. Saturday.

Cunningham along with Terry Smith, Marcus Thompson and Kolby Barnhill will run Saturday in the finals at 4:40 p.m. for the meet's final event.

Holly Rollins will compete as McMurry's only woman in the indoor national meet Saturday in the pole vault at 10 a.m.
