Orosey, TLU dominate McMurry in ASC West opener, 17-3

Box Score

SEGUIN, Texas – Brad Orosey was dominant on the mound and Texas Lutheran pounded out four home runs and 21 hits on the way to a 17-0 victory over McMurry University Friday afternoon at Katt-Isbel Field.

Friday's game was the first of a three-game series between the two teams to open up American Southwest Conference West Division series, but it was all Bulldogs to start things off. Orosey, who now carries a 16-1 all-time record for TLU struck out 14 batters and allowed only three hits through eight scoreless innings to move to 6-0 on the season.

The Bulldog offense got home runs from Darwin Lucero, Cody Miller, Jason McGill and Evan Curtis on the way to a 14-run victory. Lucero and Curtis finished with three RBI apiece for TLU.

With two outs in the bottom of the third, the McMurry infield allowed a routine fly ball to hit the ground harmlessly, which allowed a run to score before subsequently four more TLU runs came around to give the Bulldogs a 5-0 lead that could have been avoided.

Then, after TLU built an 8-0 lead after a three-run fourth, with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning eight runs scored after and error in the outfield on a fly ball would have ended the inning and the defending ASC West Champs took advantage scoring eight unearned runs after the defensive miscue to build a 16-0 run.

The Bulldogs added one more run before McMurry's reserves put up three runs in the top of the ninth inning including a solo home run from McMurry's Walt Williams.

Orosey needed just 89 pitches through eight innings and never allowed a runner past second base in his eight innings of work. The sophomore right hander who already has a no-hitter on the season lowered his microscopic ERA to 1.18 after the eight innings of shutout baseball. Cory Davis picked up the loss for McMurry to move to 1-1

McMurry fell to 6-10 on the season and the Bulldogs improved to13-4. The two teams will square off in a doubleheader at Noon Saturday to conclude the series. Both games will be broadcast to Abilene fans on ESPN Radio 1560 AM KZQQ.
