Concordia-Texas sends McMurry men back to second place in ASC West

AUSTIN, Texas -- There's no place like home.  For Stan Bonewitz's team, nothing could be more true.  The Concordia University Texas men's basketball team improved to 8-3 at Concordia Fieldhouse this season after swatting away McMurry University, 108-89, on Saturday evening.

After falling to both McMurry (14-7, 12-5 American Southwest Conference) and Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene last week, the Tornados (12-9, 10-7 ASC) turned things around after having their two best scoring outputs of the season.

CTX relied on outstanding defensive efforts from its club.  The Tornados set the school record with 13 total blocks.  Junior center Collin Perkins eclipsed the school's individual record for blocks in a game after turning away McMurry offensive players seven times, six of which came in the first half.  Senior forward Brad Walker tied his career-high with five blocked shots, while junior forward Justin Reefer chipped in with one of his own.

Walker paced Concordia with a career-best 31 points.  He also pulled down a team-high 10 boards.  Freshman guard Nick Haynes turned in his fourth 20-point game of the season after netting 20 points.

Concordia shot 52.6% (10-of-19) from beyond the arc in the win.  Both teams exhibited solid free throw shooting.  McMurry shot 82.6% (38-of-46) from the line, while the Tornados hit 82.1% (32-of-39) of their shots.  Overall, 63 fouls were called in the contest.  Concordia was whistled for 35 of them.

After a slow start by both teams, Concordia turned it on after the first media timeout.  The Tornados jumped out to an eight-point lead (13-5).  However, Jeremie Hart sparked an 11-2 run, which helped McMurry take a one-point lead (16-15).  The McMurry lead lasted less than a minute as Concordia went back in front as freshman forward Darien Harris broke free underneath for a layup.  From that point the Tornados never looked back.

Concordia would increase its lead throughout the first half and led by 19 (54-35) at halftime.  A 13-4 run by the Tornados to start the second half saw Concordia extend its lead to its largest of the game at 28 points (67-39).  CTX would cruise the rest of the way, not letting McMurry any closer than 15.

Hart tied the Concordia Fieldhouse record with 32 points.  14 of his 32 points came from the free throw line.  Hart also recorded a game-high 12 rebounds.
