Holmes, who announced he would step down after 20 seasons Wednesday, will still take his team to the American Southwest Conference Tournament in Belton to face East Texas Baptist in the quarterfinals round Thursday, but McMurry's loss dropped the team to 17-8 overall and the team finished with a 15-6 league record.
McMurry led 41-27 with 13:51 to play, but the Mountaineers went on a 21-4 run that spanned 7:29 in the second half. Schreiner led by as many as five points with 3:25 to go, but McMurry fought back and eventually knotted the scored with 25 seconds left to go when Moreno hit two free throws with 25 seconds left to make the score 62-all.
The Mountaineers crossed half court and called a timeout with nine seconds to go. Prince took the ball and drove to the paint hitting a floating jumper in the lane for the go-ahead bucket.
Both teams shot poorly in the first half, but especially Schreiner. McMurry shot 38 percent while the Mountaineers shot just 26 percent and the home team carried a 32-20 halftime lead. However, in the second half, the Mountaineers caught fire and hit 17 of 29 shots for 59 percent and finished the game at a respectable 41 percent from the floor.
Schreiner's bench shined as all three of its leading scorers came off the bench. Riley Battle scored 20 points, Trevor Conner had 17 and Mark Hopkins scored 12 points in reserve roles for the Mountaineers.
McMurry seniors
Steven Luckey and Moreno scored 14 points apiece in their final games at home while
Jamal Anene had three points and seven rebounds in his final game.
Ryan Boyd had seven points in his final game at home.
