ORANGE, Calif. – The No. 7-ranked Chapman Panthers took two games from McMurry University by a combined score of 23-7 at Hart Park. The Panthers took game one 13-4 and followed with a 10-3 victory and held McMurry's offense to just six hit apiece in each game.
In the first game, starter
Michael Dibiasi gave up 13 hits and eight runs in 3.1 innings of work. Chapman jumped out to a 7-0 lead before McMurry scored four runs in the top of the fourth inning. However, that would be all the offense McMurry could muster up and the Panthers added a run apiece in the fourth and fifth innings and then four runs in the bottom of the eighth.
Colby Walding and
Michael Falcone provided the first two runs for McMurry when they were each hit by pitch consecutively with the bases loaded. Then,
Jake Mullin hit a two-run double to cut the Chapman lead to three. However, in the final five innings, McMurry just had two hits and Chapman held them scoreless.
Jordan Sigman picked up the win on the mound for Chapman in five innings of work while Dibiasi fell to 0-2 on the season. Tyler Hadzinsky, Matt Luzar and Bobby Evers homered for the Panthers in the win.
In the second game, McMurry's
Dakota Smith kept the Panthers at bay offensively for the first three innings and the offense took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third when
Andrew Bell doubled home
Bradd Baker.
However, the wheels came off for Smith in the fourth when the Panthers scored eight runs in the bottom of the fourth on seven hits. Smith finished with 3.2 innings pitched, he allowed eight hits, seven runs, walked four and struck out two to fall to 1-1 on the season. Spence Smith and
Hunter Lane combined for the final 4.1 innings in relief and gave up a combined three runs.
Falcone and Lane each singled home runs in the top of the ninth, but that would be as far as the rally would go.
Chapman improved to 6-1 with the doubleheader sweep while McMurry fell to 1-4. The two teams will square off Saturday at 3 p.m. for the final game of the series.
