The McMurry tennis teams split decisions Saturday with Austin College with the McMurry men's team taking a convincing 9-0 victory over the 'Roos while the women fell 5-4 to AC. The men played in Lubbock Saturday morning against NCAA Division I Texas Tech falling 7-0 before heading back to Abilene to beat Austin College.
In the match against Texas Tech, the Red Raiders swept all six singles matches and took all three matches on the doubles court. In division I rules, the doubles matches count as one decision, officially making the score 7-0.
In the match against Austin College, the division III rules, doubles matches count one point apiece so McMurry took the match 9-0.
Will Davis and
Bryan Rainwater combined for an 8-3 win,
Levi Cockrill and
Daniel Olivares won 8-0 while
Tony Williams and
Brent Abilez won by default.
On the singles court, Davis took three sets to beat AC's Tyler Roust by a score of 6-1, 4-6, 11-9. Rainwater and Olivares each took 6-0, 6-0 wins and Williams won 6-2, 6-3. Abilez and Cockrill won by default.
In women's action, McMurry took two of three matches on the doubles court with
Gavee Olsen and
Chelsea Miller teaming up for an 8-3 win while Hillary Stone and
Karlie Deiterich edged AC's Paula Vercher and Emily Kuo 9-7.
However, on the singles court, the Lady 'Roos took the top four decisions while McMurry's five and six seeds took wins on the singles court. Stone was able to defeat Vercher 6-0-, 6-0 and
Rachel Smith defeated Brittany Lobaugh 6-0, 7-5.
Both team swill be back in action Friday and Saturday. The men will take on NCAA Division I UT-Arlington and Dallas Baptist Friday and then will face LeTourneau and UT-Tyler on the road Saturday. The women will face DBU Friday and LeTourneau and UT-Tyler Saturday.
