ETBU bests McMurry in overtime, 83-79

MARSHALL, Texas - McMurry came up on the short end of a see-saw battle against East Texas Baptist as the Tigers outscored the visitors 8-4 in overtime to take a 83-79 victory at Ornelas Gymnasium Thursday. The Tigers' Josh Chambers had 17 points, 10 rebounds and seven blocked shots to pace ETBU's effort to remain atop the American Southwest Conference East Division.

Both team held half-game leads in its respective divisions entering into the contest, However, McMurry will drop to second behind Mary Hardin-Baylor after falling to 6-3 overall and 4-2 in league play. The Tigers, who started the season 6-0, rebounded from a Saturday loss to Hardin-Simmons to move to 7-1 overall and keep their east division lead with a 5-1 mark.

McMurry began the game with a 10-2 lead and held an eight-point lead on two different occasions in the first half. However, the Tigers fought back each time and knotted the score at 35 at halftime. In the second half, it was ETBU's turn to start hot, and the home team built a 49-37 lead in the second half. However, thanks to the help of Steven Jones who had nine points and three steals in a key stretch late in the second half, McMurry eventually forced overtime when the score was tied at 75-75 at the end of regulation.

However, McMurry would shoot just 1 for 10 from the field in the overtime period and fell for the second time this season in extra time. Jones finished with 22 points, six rebounds and five steals in the losing effort while Teddy Chambers added 13, Derick SUmpted scored 11 and Cameron Quinton added 10 in the losing effort. Including Josh Chambers, six players scored in double figures for the Tigers.

McMurry will play host to NCAA Division I SMU Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
