TYLER, Texas- McMurry squandered a 16-point second-half lead and fell 74-67 at the Herrington Patriot Center Monday night in American Southwest Conference action. The Patriots hit 13 of 21 shots in the second half and limited McMurry to a 33-percent shooting effort in the second period to complete the comeback.
McMurry led 41-26 at half and built a 16-point lead in the second half when
Anna Berthel hit one of two free throws with 18:54 to play to lead 42-26. However from there, the Patriots went on a 26-9 run to take its first lead with 9:24 to play and eventually regained the lead for good with 4:31 to go when Melissa Thomas' jumper broke a 61-all tie, and the Patriots finished with a 13-6 run.
Thomas scored 21 points and was 10 for 11 from the free-throw line to lead UTT. Kayla McGovern scored 14 off the bench and reserve Paige Parrish added a dozen. Patriot point guard Lindsey Hausmann scored 10 points and had seven assists.
In the losing effort,
Hailey Stacy scored a career-high 20 points for McMurry with her previous career high coming against UT-Tyler last season with 14. The junior finished with a team-high three steals and hit 7 of 15 shots from the field.
Anna Berthel had 12 points and three boards while
Jordan Stansell and Victoria Salazar each had nine points. Stansell added nine rebounds to lead McMurry.
With the loss McMurry moves to 2-2 on the season with a 1-1 record in American Southwest Conference play. McMurry will play again Thursday at 5:30 p.m. against the University of the Ozarks at Kimbrell Arena.
