Strong first half pushes McMurry men to ASC opening win over LeTourneau, 83-62

LONGVIEW – McMurry shot 48 percent from the floor, dominated the paint and made the most of its transition game in a 83-62 victory in the American Southwest Conference opener against LeTourneau on the road Saturday afternoon.

McMurry scored 50 of its points in the paint while LeTourneau managed just 16 points inside. McMurry also outscored the YellowJackets on the fast break 18-2. Steven Jones had 16 points, six boards and three steals while Teddy Chambers had 13 points, seven rebounds and two blocks. Steven Johnkin added 11 points.

McMurry shot 16 of 28 from the floor for 57 percent in the first half to jump out to a 49-29 lead at halftime. The Yellow Jackets matched McMurry nearly point for point in the second half, but the first half hole was too great for the home team.

With 10:29 to play, LeTourneau trailed 18-14, but McMurry outscored the YellowJackets 31-15 in the last 10 minutes of the first period to put the game out of reach. McMurry's largest lead came on a Chris Beck layup with 6:57 to play putting the visitors up 29 points at 72-43.

No player scored in double figures for LeTourneau, but 13 players scored and Jacob McCarthy led the team with nine points on three 3-point field goals off the bench. The YellowJackets shot 38 percent from the floor and were 10 for 14 from the free-throw line. LeTourneau hit eight 3-pointers but did it on 26 attempts.

The visitors made the most of their free-throw opportunities hitting 22 of 29 from the charity stripe. McMurry won the glass battle taking 45 rebounds compared to LeTourneau's 28, and defensively the YellowJackets had just three steals while McMurry had 13.

McMurry moved to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in ASC competition, and LeTourneau fell to 1-3 and 0-1 respectively. McMurry returns to action Monday night in Tyler against UT-Tyler at 7:30 p.m.
