McMurry to take on NCAA Division I UT-San Antonio

Head coach Ron Holmes and McMurry University's men's basketball team head to San Antonio Sunday night to face NCAA Division I UT-San Antonio
McMurry University resumes its men's basketball schedule Sunday evening in San Antonio facing NCAA Division I foe UT-San Antonio. The matchup, scheduled for a 6 p.m. tipoff, features McMurry with a 7-2 record while the Roadrunners carry a 9-3 record into the contest.

The Roadrunners are fresh off a 83-82 win over the University of Houston, which came Friday at UTSA's Convocation Center. The 9-3 start is the best by a UTSA team since the 2000-2001 season when the team went 10-3.

The Roadrunners have been on a steady climb since hiring former NBA player Brooks Thompson as head coach beginning in 2006. In his first season, Thompson went 7-22 before posting a 13-17 mark in his second season in 2007-08. However, Thompson led the Roadrunners to its first winning season since 2004-05 last season with a 19-13 record. The fourth-year head coach has also helped his squad defend its home court with a 6-0 clip this season, and UTSA has won 17 of its last 20 at the Convocation Center.

Sunday night's matchup will mark the third-straight season that the teams have played against each other, and the Roadrunners lead the overall series 4-0. Last time the teams met was Nov. 25, 2008 when UTSA defeated McMurry 80-55.

UTSA has a balanced scoring attack led by three players averaging in double figures. Devin Gibson leads the trio at 13.5 points per game, Morris Smith IV averages 11.8 points per contest and Omar Johnson averages 11 points per game thus far in the season.

McMurry last played Dec. 20 taking a 75-68 road win over UT-Dallas, then ranked No. 9 among NCAA Division III teams. McMurry received votes in the latest D3hoops.com National Top 25 poll after the upset win over the Comets.

Jeremie Hart leads McMurry in scoring with 20.4 points per contest, which is second in the American Southwest Conference. McMurry's senior point guard Robert Moreno is in the top five in several ASC categories including the lead in both assists per game (6.0) and assist-to-turnover ratio (2.2). The Brownsville native is also third in the league in steals per game (2.3) and fourth in 3-point field goal percentage (.560).

Sunday's game will not be streamed live on mcmurrysports.com, but Abilene fans can catch the local broadcast on ESPN Radio 1560 AM KZQQ or follow UTSA's live stats feed by clicking here.
