Moreno-less McMurry falls to last-place TLU, 65-61

SEGUIN, Texas – Texas Lutheran University knocked off the first place team in the American Southwest Conference West Division with a 65-61 victory over McMurry University Thursday night at Memorial Gymnasium. Michael Flores scored 10 of his 15 points in the final 6:26 including two key 3-pointers that helped put the Bulldogs over the top.

McMurry led 50-46 until Flores hit a 3-pointer with 6:26 remaining to cut the lead to one points. Up until that point, TLU had missed its first eight 3-point field goal attempts of the game. Then, the Bulldogs took the lead with 5:34 left when Brad Howard drained another 3-pointer.

Steven Luckey did help McMurry regain the lead with 5:25 with a  pair of free throws, but Flores scored five-straight points to help the Bulldogs take the lead for good. Jeremie Hart gave McMurry a little bit of life with 37 seconds left when he hit a 3-pointer to make the score 61-59 with 37 seconds left. However, Flores iced the game when he hit the game's final two free throws with 19 seconds left.

Isaac Williams led Texas Lutheran with 16 points, Flores added 15 and George Davis had a dozen for the Bulldogs who improved to 4-10 overall and moved to 2-8 in the ASC. Howard came off the bench and paced TLU's 50 percent shooting effort with six assists

Hart scored 20 points in the losing effort and added 12 rebounds for a double-double. He made 9 of 12 shots from the free-throw line. Luckey finished with 12 points. McMurry played without senior point guard Robert Moreno who was attending to a family matter. McMurry suffered 18 turnovers and had just seven assists, nine below its season average.

McMurry fell to 8-5 overall and 6-3 in league play. The team will try and rebound Saturday against Schreiner in Kerrville with a  3 p.m. tip.
