RICHARDSON, Texas – Rachel Addison scored 26 points and UT-Dallas shot 57 percent from the floor on the way to a 80-71 victory over McMurry University Sunday afternoon at the UTD Activity Center. McMurry managed just a 35-percent shooting effort and the Lady Comets closed the game with an 11-5 run to seal the victory.
The loss leaves McMurry winless on the road this season as the visitors have dropped all five decisions on the road thus far. McMurry fell to 3-5 overall and 2-4 in American Southwest Conference competition.
UT-Dallas' win over McMurry was just the second in the program's history and both wins have come in each of the last two matchups. Addison hit 10 of 12 shots from the floor and was 6 of 7 from the free-throw line helping her double her points per game average for the season. Addison averaged 12.6 points per game entering into the contest.
Addison had help from Lyndsey Smith who had 17 points and four assists while Tawni Ichimura had 13 points and seven assists in the victory. Ichimura's seven assists led the team, which was credited with 20 assists on 29 field goals. UT-Dallas was able to defeat McMurry's zone with good ball movement.
For the game, the Lady Comets hit 29 of 56 shots from the floor, they were 7 of 16 from beyond the 3-point arc and UTD was 15 of 19 from the free-throw line.
McMurry's shooting woes continued as the team hit just 25 of 67 shots from the field. The team hit 4 of 18 shots from 3-point land with
Kelsey Lindemuth hitting all four long-range attempts. She finished with a career-high 20 points on 8 of 15 shooting off the bench to lead McMurry in the losing effort.
LaPorsha Alexander had 15 points off the bench,
Anna Berthel added 13 and
Rikeita Thomas had 10 points. However, McMurry is still trying to find the shooting touch this season, and through eight games, the team is hitting just 36 percent of its shots from the field.
Alexander tied the score at 55-all with 6:25 to play in regulation, but from there the Comets took over and later took a nine-point lead with 3:15 remaining on a successful 3-point attempt from Smith. However, McMurry countered with a 5-0 run with two free throws from
Amanda Peters and Lindemuth's final 3-pointer of the game making the score 69-65 with 2:24 to play.
However, the Lady Comets took over with three different players scoring buckets while Chelsea Edwards added three points from the free-throw line and Ichimura adding one to ice the game.
UT-Dallas improved to 6-2 overall and 4-1 against ASC competition. McMurry returns to action Dec. 29-30 at a tournament in Round Rock hosted by Concordia-Texas. Dec. 29 McMurry takes on Concordia-Chicago at 3 p.m., and then Dec. 30 the team faces William-Smith at 3 p.m.
