RICHARDSON, Texas – McMurry's volleyball season came to an end Friday at the hands of its third loss this season to Hardin-Simmons. This time, however, the match came in the semi-final round of the American Southwest Conference Volleyball Tournament and McMurry will end its season with an 18-12 record.
The Cowgirls took a 25-16, 25-17, 21-25, 25-19 victory all while hitting an impressive .257 as a team. Kaela Parnell and Madison Reyes led the offensive charge with 18 and 14 kills respectively.
McMurry and HSU went back-and-forth in set on and at one point midway through the match the teams were tied at 13-13. However, the Cowgirls closed the match with a 12-3 run to take the opening set. Then, HSU jumped out to an early 12-5 lead in set two. McMurry countered by cutting the deficit to 15-13, however the Cowgirls nixed the rally by closing set two with a 10-4 run to go up two sets to none.
McMurry took control in set three to force the fourth set with a 25-21 win to keep the season alive. McMurry carried the momentum in to set four with a 12-6 lead, however, HSU racked up eight-straight points to take a 15-12 lead and then held on for a 25-19 win.
Bennie Smith led McMurry with 13 kills in the losing effort and
Danielle Kelton had 12 kills and 19 digs in her final match as a McMurry volleyball player. She finished one kill shy of becoming second on McMurry's all-time career kills list. She'll finish behind Sabrina Griffin's (1993-96) mark of 1,056. She also finished as third all-time on the McMurry's career digs list and finished with 1,418. Kelton was head coach
Cammie Petree's lone senior on the 2009 squad.
M.J. Vickers also had a solid offensive game for McMurry with nine kills. McMurry hit .107 as a team in the losing effort.
