ABILENE, TX - The McMurry men's soccer team opened its conference schedule with a hard-fought 3-1 loss to Centenary College on Friday at Wilford Moore Stadium. The War Hawks showed grit by getting on the scoreboard late in the second half, but couldn't overcome the Gents' early lead.
Centenary scored twice in the first half, including an early penalty kick in the 7th minute. The Gents extended their lead to 3-0 in the 84th minute. The War Hawks finally broke through in the 89th minute when Pedro Yanez scored on a penalty kick, marking his fifth goal of the season.
The War Hawks were outshot 6-5 but dominated possession with a slight 51% to 49% advantage. McMurry's offense found more rhythm in the second half, taking five of its six total shots after the break. In addition to Yanez, Abel Gonzalez, Jovani Burnett, Justyn Judie, and Dylan Christian were among the players recording shots for the War Hawks. Goalkeeper Jose Sanchez finished the night with one save.
The War Hawks' next match will be against the University of St. Thomas on Sunday, September 28, at 1:30 p.m. at ACU's Elmer Gray Stadium.
