SAN ANTONIO, TX – The McMurry War Hawks' season concluded with a 10-4 loss to Trinity University in Game 2 of the NCAA D-III Championship Super Regional, ending their impressive run with a 35-13 record.
Trinity got on the scoreboard in the top of the second inning with a two-run home run.
McMurry quickly responded in the bottom half of the inning. Collin Bruning walked, and Beckham Paul laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Bruning to second. Josh Mueller reached on a fielder's choice, and Blake Beach walked to load the bases. Ty Nelson hit a 2-RBI double to right-center, scoring Beach and Mueller to tie the game at 2-2.
McMurry threatened to score again in the bottom of the third inning when Michael Smosna hit a two-out triple to center field, but the War Hawks could not bring him in.
Trinity retook the lead in the top of the fourth inning with an RBI single to make the score 3-2.
McMurry answered again in the bottom of the fourth with Josh Mueller leading off the inning with a walk and moving to second on a sacrifice bunt by Blake Beach. Xavier Escobar laced a single to left field, moving Mueller into scoring position. A balk by Trinity's pitcher allowed Mueller to score, tying the game again at 3-3.
Trinity regained the lead in the top of the 6th with an RBI double, making the score 4-3, then scored another run in the top of the seventh to push their lead to 5-3.
McMurry fought back to score a run in the bottom of the seventh. Koy Carpenter singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch and to third on a subsequent throwing error, then Michael Smosna singled up the middle to drive Carpenter home, bringing the score to 5-4.
However, Trinity pulled ahead in the top of the 8th with a two-run home run, pushing their lead to 6-4. They added three more runs in the top of the 9th, including a three-run home run, to extend their lead to 10-4.
The War Hawks did try to build a comeback with Ty Nelson and Koy Carpenter singling to put runners on the basepaths, but Trinity was able to close out the game.
Ethan Wendel started on the mound for McMurry, pitching 5.1 innings and allowing four runs on seven hits. David Perez, Trey Gomez, and Bryson Morrill all pitched in relief.
Though this game ended the McMurry's season, the team has set the bar high for future War Hawks Baseball teams to strive to equal and surpass.
