SAN ANTONIO, TX - The McMurry War Hawks faced Trinity University in the NCAA D-III Championship Super Regional Round at Trinity Baseball Field. Trinity defeated McMurry 5-4 in the first game of the best-of-three series.
McMurry started the scoring in the top of the 2nd inning, scoring two unearned runs. Michael Smosna walked, and Nolan Scherencel reached on an error by the catcher, advancing Smosna to second. Beckham Paul reached on a fielder's choice, and an error by the shortstop allowed Paul to advance to second and Smosna and Scherencel to score to go up 2-0.
Trinity University got on the board in the bottom of the third inning with a solo home run, cutting into McMurry's lead, 2-1.
McMurry extended their lead in the top of the 4th inning, adding two more runs. Blake Beach walked, and Xavier Escobar doubled, putting runners on second and third. Koy Carpenter then hit a 2-RBI double, scoring both Escobar and Beach, making the score 4-1.
Trinity chipped away at the lead, scoring a run in the bottom of the 4th with another solo home run. They added another run in the bottom of the 6th. Trinity then took the lead in the bottom of the 7th, scoring two runs to make it 5-4.
Hunter Poe started on the mound for McMurry, pitching 6.0 innings and allowing three runs on four hits. Jonathan Enriquez pitched 1.1 innings in relief, allowing two runs on four hits. Gabriel Aragon finished on the mound for the War Hawks, pitching 2/3 of an inning, only giving up a single hit and no runs.
McMurry looks to get back in the series with the second game of the Super Regional on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. The War Hawks will need to secure a win to force a third game, which will start approximately 45 minutes after the conclusion of game two.
