Seguin, TX - The McMurry War Hawks emerged victorious in a tightly contested first game of a doubleheader against Texas Lutheran, securing a 7-4 win.
Texas Lutheran and McMurry both went scoreless through the first three innings. Texas Lutheran threatened to score in the bottom of the first, getting a player to third, but
Ethan Wendel shut them down.
McMurry broke the deadlock in the top of the 6th inning when Nolan Scherence singled, driving in
Riley Hood to give the War Hawks a 1-0 lead. In the top of the seventh, McMurry extended their lead to 4-0, thanks to hits from
Michael Smosna and
Nolan Scherencel.
Texas Lutheran responded in the bottom of the seventh with a run, making it 4-1. The Bulldogs rallied in the bottom of the eighth inning, scoring two more runs to close the gap to 4-3. However, McMurry countered in the top of the ninth with Nolan Scherence delivering a two-RBI triple and then scoring on a passed ball to extend the lead to 7-3.
Texas Lutheran managed to score one more run in the bottom of the ninth, but McMurry reliever
Bryson Morrill closed out the game to secure the 7-4 victory. By picking up the save, Morrill set a new single-season record for saves with his seventh on the season.
Ethan Wendel earned the win on the mound, pitching seven strong innings, striking out three, and allowing one run on five hits.
In the second game of the doubleheader, the War Hawks dominated on the mound and at the plate with a commanding 12-1 victory.
McMurry started strong, scoring one run in the first inning and three runs in the second, highlighted by a three-run homer from
Xavier Escobar, to take an early 4-0 lead. The War Hawks added three more runs in the third inning, capitalizing on Texas Lutheran errors, to extend their lead to 7-0.
McMurry continued to pour it on in the fifth inning, scoring five runs, including a 2 RBI single by
Nolan Scherencel, to make the score 12-0. Texas Lutheran scored one run in the bottom of the fifth, but McMurry's dominant performance secured the 12-1 win.
Hunter Poe pitched a complete game for McMurry, allowing only one run on two hits and striking out five to pick up his sixth victory.
The series victory pushes McMurry's season record to 24-9 and conference record to 16-8 to maintain a hold on a postseason berth.
The War Hawks return home to Walt Driggers Field for a weekday game against Howard Payne on Tuesday, April 15th, at 7:00 p.m.
