HOUSTON- The McMurry baseball team was able to earn another conference series victory as they traveled to Houston to take on St. Thomas for a 3 game weekend series on the road.Â
The War Hawks were able to take two out of three to secure the series win, as they have now won their last 2 series and improved to 16-7 on the year while being 11-7 in conference play. McMurry was able to improve their place in the SCAC standings as they now sit at 4th place & are only 1/2 game back of TLU who is currently in 3rd place.Â
Game 1 was a back and forth contest from the start, as both teams scored 3 runs apiece in the first inning alone. The squads would continue to mirror each other as the 2nd, 3rd, & 4th inning were scoreless from both teams before they both plated across 2 runs in the 5th inning. McMurry was able to gain their separation in the 8th & 9th innings as they scored 1 in each inning & held them off defensively to secure the win in game 1 by a score of 7-5.Â
Game 2 was a solid game for the War Hawks on both offense and defense.  They got the scoring started early as they led 6-0 after 3 innings of play. They would add 7 more throughout the remainder of the contest as they exploded for 13 runs in this one.  McMurry's defensive efforts rose to the challenge as they were able to hold St. Thomas to only 2 runs for the entire game.  Even though the War Hawks had plenty of run insurance, they ended up not needing much of it as they went on to win this one 13-2 to secure the series victory with the first 2 games.Â
In the third and final game of the series, we saw high scoring offense from both teams as the two squads combined for 24 runs in this one. McMurry was looking to complete the sweep and came out swinging (literally) as they jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in the first inning. They added another run in the second to go ahead 6-0 but then wouldn't light up the scoreboard again until the 8th inning. The War Hawks started fast but were unable to sustain it & unable to hold St. Thomas off for the entirety of the game. The Celts would ride a huge 6th inning on their way to a 13-11 victory in the last game of the series. McMurry scored 11 runs on 18 hits but committed 4 errors.Â
The War Hawks will be back in action on Tuesday as they hit the road once again to travel to Brownwood where they will take on Howard Payne at 6:30pm.Â
